Overview

We seek to create a more just, fair society for all by supporting, caring for, and championing the small, medium and large organizations of the Social Sector.

And we want to do this together.

As the nation’s umbrella organization working with and on behalf of all missions and causes, Imagine Canada is looking for dedicated individuals to join its Board of Directors and Committees. If you like to debate issues facing charities, nonprofits and social entrepreneurs, contribute to the health and well-being of an entire sector and learn from peers and colleagues, then this is the place for you.

In the coming months, Imagine Canada is seeking to add to the talented pool of people who govern this national organization and help guide its efforts in four key areas; research and data, developing and implementing public policy initiatives, supporting the excellence of sector organizations, and reframing the conversation with Canadians about the sector.

Board and Committee Vacancies

One (1) position is currently vacant on our Board of Directors and we are seeking a candidate to begin a three-year term. We also have two (2) positions coming vacant on our Risk Management, Finance & Audit Committee and one (1) vacant position on our Public Policy Committee.  

Board of Directors

One (1) position is currently vacant and we are seeking a candidate to begin a three-year term.

Directors of Imagine Canada meet five times a year where normally, three are in-person. Currently the meetings are being held via videoconference. The Board composes the senior decision-making body of the organization and operates on a governance-as-leadership model.

Key Considerations

As a Board that is representing national interests, Imagine Canada is committed to broadening the diversity of our Board of Directors. We are seeking candidates that are committed to anti-discrimination and anti-racism, and particularly encourage applications from Black people, Indigenous people, people of colour, people with disabilities, members of the LGBTQ2+ community, and those with varied areas of expertise and lived experiences. Accommodations are available on request for candidates taking part in all aspects of the selection process.

As per the organization’s Bylaws, the Nominating Sub-committee will ensure that at least half of the Directors are connected (through employment, Board or volunteer service) to an organization that is a Member of Imagine Canada. While the sector is too vast to have all sub-sectors represented at any one time, we seek to ensure a ‘rotation of interests’ whereby different mission or cause areas are present on the Board.

Priority Areas

The Board is focused on achieving the priorities of its Strategic Planning Framework. From time to time, different priority areas emerge to support key aspects of its work. This year, the Nominating Sub-committee is giving priority to the following areas:

  • Skills/Experience – Individuals with a Chartered Professional Accountant designation and/or experience in academics, market research, risk management and public policy experience
  • Subsectors – Individuals with current or previous experience in government
  • Geography – Anywhere in Canada, with particular interest in individuals from Alberta, Atlantic provinces and the Northern territories
  • Demographic background – Individuals with a variety of experience due to gender, age, and ethnicity

Risk Management, Finance & Audit Committee

This committee is composed of Directors and non-Directors, with a maximum of eight members. Two (2) positions are coming vacant on our Risk Management, Finance & Audit Committee. This committee meets five times a year via videoconference. Among its other duties, it is responsible for reviewing the budget prepared by Management for presentation to the Board, considering regular financial reports, and identifying risks to the organization and Management’s proposals for mitigating those risks.

The key criteria in selecting members to the Risk Management, Finance & Audit Committee are:

  • designation as a chartered Professional Accountant
  • a good understanding of nonprofits and/or charities
  • excellent business judgment
  • experience in finance, business, law, compliance and/or risk management
  • geographic diversity
  • “out of the box” thinking
  • understanding of the respective roles of the Board, the committee, external auditors and Management in overseeing the financial operations of the organization

Public Policy Committee

This committee is composed of Directors and non-Directors, with a maximum of six members. One (1) position is currently vacant on our Public Policy Committee. This committee meets roughly four times a year via videoconference. It is responsible for working with Staff to maintain a set of Board-approved official public policy positions.

The key criteria in selecting members of the committee are significant experience within the Canadian government.

Call for Nominations/Expressions of Interest

Imagine Canada invites nominations or expressions of interest from those wishing to serve on the Board of Directors or one of its Committees. Nominations and expressions of interest should be submitted by March 25, 2021 to Danielle Ferguson-Shivrattan at dshivrattan@imaginecanada.ca
